Adapted from Goethe’s novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” the Goethe's work was the basis for the 1892 opera Werther by Jules Massenet. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster finds the book in a leather portmanteau, along with two others – Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, and Milton's Paradise Lost. Lyric drama in 4 acts and 5 scenes based on a libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, after Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther.Premiered in February 1892 in Vienna translated in german, then in french in Geneva and in Paris, at the Opéra-Comique, in January 1893. There are excellent examples of filmed opera that actually works, but this Werther has somewhat lost its focus, when the director was, seemingly, wavering between film and opera, trying to give full play of both. In its elaborate sceneries and camera work, the deep passion and brooding effect, which is what really matters in this opera, flags. The controversial adaptation by Jules Massenet of Goethe's first — and hugely successful — novel.

Goethe’s novel of letters 'Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers' (The Sorrows of Young Werther) is a classic example of the German 'Sturm und Drang' (storm and drive) movement that foregrounded a character's turbulent emotional inner life and their often violent subsequent actions driven by feeling rather than rationality.
